The Office of Minority Male Health has partnered with two local community-based organizations to offer health services to at risk male populations.  Memorandums of Understanding have been entered with Migrant Education Program (a program of the Chester County Intermediate Unit) and South Brandywine Middle School in Coatesville, PA, to create health education/promotion/prevention programs to improve and increase the health awareness and social/emotional development amongst Black and Hispanic middle and high school males.

As part of the community outreach component of the Office of Minority Male Health (OMMH) the following programs have been implemented:

Mentoring Program - - The mentoring program was implemented at South Brandywine Middle School to inform adolescent minority males of health issues plaguing their race and to provide the young men with experiences that are designed to motivate them to maintain and improve their health.  To achieve the goals of the mentoring project, OMMH has the following key objectives:

·        To influence their exercise and eating behaviors with an educational approach aimed at changing their knowledge, attitudes, skills and behaviors

·        To increase students awareness, knowledge, attitudes about risky behaviors (substance abuse, violence, teen pregnancy)

·        To provide male students access to positive, enriching activities during out of school hours, helping them to reduce at risk behaviors while building personal, social and leadership skills

·        To provide academic and social support to students

·        To enable students to develop skills to engage in health enhancing behaviors (fitness, healthy eating.)

·        To increase knowledge about the relationship between lifestyle and health

The program will focus on the objectives previously mentioned, through interactive workshops, forums and activities that will take place the duration of the program.

The targeted group will be minority males in the 6th – 8th grades.    Twenty minority male students who are at risk for academic failure [s1] serve as protégés (mentees) in the project.  Twenty-five male undergraduates and administrators from Lincoln University will serve as mentors.

Health Career Club - Program at Fred S. Engle Middle School in West Grove, PA. Participants learn about medical and allied health careers in an effort to increase minority male interest and participation those careers.  Program meets every Tuesday after school.  Males currently participating

Video Production Program – Program at Avon Grove High School in which high school males learn the art of TV and video production and about the health disparities affecting the Hispanic community.   The students will then employ social marketing techniques to create public service announcements targeting the Hispanic community.
